Runestone and more

Today I went for a walk in the beautiful summer landscape here in Sweden. Just a bit outside the city of Uppsala, is a place full of memories from a distant past with vikings and their runestoes with runes that remebered their lost family members.

Just close to my home is this runestone from about 1000 yeras ago that tells us a story about a man that lost his life and were remebered by his brothers and family.

And here is another glimpse of a really lovely forrest, gren and cool to walk in on a hot summer day.

This is the place I went to today, Marma Store that had a car boot sale, a thrift store and a nice coffee bar.

Remembering the dead

Yesterday it was the day to remember the dead, All Saints' day, here in Sweden. Everybody that has a dead family member, or friend, lights a candle at their graves.

I of course I went to the church cemetary and the family crypt where my parents are buried, my mother Gunvor the artist, and my father Bertil. And then the grave of my uncle Åke, the famous historian.

Here you can see the lights outside the family crypt, build 1770.

The church I am talking about is Östuna kyrka, close to Uppsala, it was built in the late 1400.

River run wild in Uppsala

More photo's from Uppsala. This Fyris river runs wild in the central parts of Uppsala. This photo is taken some weeks ago, in summer. Boats can still sail up the river from lake Mälaren.

And this is a piece of the more modern Uppsala, the department store Åhlens.

It is not beautiful, but a famous, or infamous, part of the modern architecture in the city center.

At Knivsta station

From the beautiful country of Malta to my little "town" of Knivsta here in Sweden. It is not really where I live but it is where I was brought up and went to school.

This little house on the photo is the old station house. Not in use anymore, but just for the moment is is used as a brewery of a very local beer, Train Station Brewery. But the train passes as usual, to Stockholm or to Uppsala.

Summer in Uppsala

Again, I wish you all a happy new 2012!

As you may now by now, vinter is not my favorite time of the year. So I will start this year with som summer photos from Uppsala. In the picture abowe you can se the Fyrisån, the small but beautiful river of Uppsala.

Uppsala is the fourth largest city of Sweden and is just 67 km north of Stockholm, it is also the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. You can se the big cathedral in this picture.

Uppsala University is very old, the oldest one in the country, founded in 1447. Here you can see Carolina Rediviva, the main building of the university library.

Here is a picture of the commercial center of Uppsala, it has plenty of nice shops and restaurants.
What I will say, it is well worth a visit!
